Christmas in May?

Sat, May 28th 2011 2:30 pm by Liz Loadholt This and That

Why would I say such a thing as "Christmas in May?"?  Well, I have this beautiful  poinsettia  that is still beautiful --- it was purchased in December 2010 --

                                           Poinsetttia plant

and this photo was taken May 23, 2011 ---- WOW -- it just does not want to die --- it even has new growth.

According to Aggie Horticulture the way to keep a poinsettia blooming for a longer time one needs to:"Check your poinsettia daily and follow these tips. Water your poinsettia frequently but don't drown it. Keep the plant out of drafts, hot or cold. Place the plant in good light inside the house. And finally, after blooming, discard or begin preparing the plant to bloom agai...

Is It a Good Time to Buy a Home?

Sun, May 22nd 2011 4:37 pm by Liz Loadholt Real Estate Tips

photo of a home

What do people think?  Do people think that this is  a good time to buy a home?

There have been three separate surveys just recently who say that it is.

  1. The Gallup Poll which showed that 69% of Americans think this is a good time to buy.
  2. Fannie Mae’s National Housing Survey which reported that Americans believe that homeownership is the investment with the most potential. They chose owning a home over other traditional investments such as stocks, mutual funds and bonds.
  3. The Pew Research Center study Home Sweet Home. Still explaining that 81% agree that buying a home is the best long-term investment a person can make.

The family was there to show support and to celebrate with her. This was indeed a veryemotional time and a very joyous time for all of us.

She had the biggest smile on her face after her treatment -- the first smile I have seen in several weeks.

Now, we begin the healing process which we understand from her doctor is a long process -- however, we don’t care -- we just know that today the healing can begin...

Radiation Treatment - Piece of Cake?

Sun, May 15th 2011 4:00 pm by Liz Loadholt Family

Is radiation treatment really just a piece of cake?

Well, quite a few well wishers informed our daughter, Liza, and our family that radiation treatment for her breast cancer wouldlady going thru radiation treatment be a ‘piece of cake’.

Since Liza had undergone chemo, we were looking for some relief. We all wanted so much to believe that she would not have to undergo anymore pain.

So, we believed them and she went into her radiation treatment with high expectations of no pain, no nausea,no feeling drug out.

Being the optimistic family that we are, we were so thrilled that her misery was behind her.

Well, I guess radiation on different parts of the body act differently and also, I guess that there are probably different “dos...

Mt Pleasant SC - Do you like crabs?

Fri, May 6th 2011 4:49 pm by Liz Loadholt People

I like crabs, do you?

OK, living on the coast can cause you to learn to like a lot of different types of “sea animals”.

photo of 2 boys crabbingGoing crabbing with the children is so much fun.  How does one go about “crabbing”?

Well, professionals use crab traps.  But those of us non-professionals use chicken necks and string or nets.

What is necessary to go on a crabbing adventure with the children?
1) chicken necks
2) string
3) bucket
4) net to scoop them up

Tie a long string around the chicken neck and throw into the water.  Oh, BTW, you do not absolutely have to have salt water, but brackish water will do tool.

South Carolina Safe Homes

Thu, Apr 14th 2011 3:48 pm by Liz Loadholt Educational

Have you heard of the SC Safe Home Act?  Well, I feel like I have been hiding in a closet somewhere, because I had not heard of it until last week.

Homes in South Carolina photo

If your home meets certain criteria, you are eligible for up to 25% reduction on your homeowners insurance. I should mention here that not all insurance companies give discounts for this.  Allstate Wally Burbage & Assoc. does .

Also, in some cases, if your home does not meet the criteria, the state of SC will give, yes that is give, you a grant to bring the home up to the standard criteria for a SC Safe Home.

Jeff Conklin is a certified SC Safe Home Inspector in the Charleston SC area.

Baby Great Horned Own Falls From Nest

Mon, Apr 11th 2011 5:22 pm by Liz Loadholt Family

Sunday was quite an exciting day at the Loadholt/Valero home --

Early Sunday morning, Wilson Antley & Art Valero  started investigating what was driving the dogs crazy.  They found a baby Great Horned Owl on the ground under a tree --

Luckily, the dogs could get to him because of a hot wire that keeps them in our yard.

Wilson & Art scooped the owl up, put him in a box and took him to The Center for Birds of Prey in Awendaw, SC.

In the afternoon, Isaac Green, a volunteer with the Birds of Prey center called Art to let him know that the owl was OK and that yes, it was a Great Horned Owl who had not learned to fly.  Isaac said that he was bringing the Owl back to our property to rele...

Watch the Weight Fall

Fri, Apr 8th 2011 2:09 pm by Liz Loadholt Family

Do I like to watch the weight fall?  It is so much fun to watch the scales pointer to go down each week.  Well, not every week,Scales with a woman's feet on itbut most weeks.

This adventure started around the 2nd week of January 2011 -- when I was having difficulty fastening my size 14 clothes . I made the decision to join Weight Watchers.

Since I am only 5’3”, I decided that I needed to take a serious look at where I was -- not just for looks, but for my health also.

Yes, I am big boned --- (smile) -- don’t we all feel like we are big boned when we gain a lot of weight?

If I write about this adventure, I am less likely to quit -- I need to stay on track with this.

Actually, I am very proud that during my length of tim...

Tell Me It Isn't So

Fri, Apr 1st 2011 3:55 pm by Liz Loadholt Family

There has been a lot of "things" running through my head lately. My first reaction to all of it is “tell me it isn’t so”.
Liza photo
First of all, we had the set back with Liza and her being in the hospital for 4 days -- that was a couple of weeks ago, now. They discovered that she had an auto immune disease -- Pyroderma Gangrenosum  --result of the cancer -- she is doing really well this week -- she feels good and looks good.
